My experience

I have very much enjoyed making my magazine and my favourite part has been working with Photoshop. I feel I have come a long way since the preliminary task. This course has motivated me to make my own blogger account aside from this one so I can blog about things I enjoy.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups

My pop magazine is aimed mostly at teenagers and I feel like this is shown through the use of my bright colour scheme which are used throughout my media product.

I have since changed my colour scheme from this:

To the addition of yellow because I wanted to attract a fun and lively audience which is shown in my double page spread:

Furthermore the use of the image on the left on my double page spread attracts a teenage audience as the models are teenagers. The image almost portrays a romantic fantasy theme which all teenagers stereotyping are interested in.

Furthermore, I have used a mixed raced and black model, which would attract different ethnic groups as more people will feel as though they can relate to my magazine.

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. My Pop Magazine has subverted the conventions in many ways for example the model I have used is mixed raced, which you would not typically see on the front cover of a pop magazine. Therefore, to make my front cover more stereotypical, I have used a dodge tool to lighten her skin colour so she may resemble the stereotype.

BEFORE: As you can see Annelie's skin was slightly darker before I had photoshopped her.

AFTER:

2. My front cover follows conventions as I have used a masthead. Additionally, due to the fact that it is a pop magazine, I have made sure that the colour of my masthead (pink) and the font (Billo) correlates with the genre of my magazine.

3. My contents page has followed conventions as I have added an editors photo and an editors letter. Furthermore I have followed a similar layout to that of a pop contents page would. I know this as I have looked at a variety of pop magazines such as limelight, we <3 pop and bliss and seen how they have laid out. I believe that the language I have used is relevant for example the use of '!' as it follows conventions and would not be unusual to see in a pop magazine.

4. Saying this however, I believe that this sky blue background would not typically be seen in a pop magazine. Although it is a bright colour I think that perhaps a real pop magazine would have a lighter more pasty colour, perhaps a baby pink. I did not do a pink colour as it did not think it would be suitable as the page would look very overwhelming with different shades of pink everywhere drowning out the writing currently in pink and the models (nellie) jumper.

Previously there was some dead space on the  left hand side of the picture of Annerlie however I have changed it so I now have an anchorage.

My Front cover so far...

I am planning to get rid of the highlighted text on the right and will make the writing within the circle on the bottom right hand side smaller. I will do this by making the stroke smaller.

Just a thought...

When looking at other music magazine's I figured that most if not all of the mastheads correlate to the meaning and content of the actual magazine. I therefore have done the same. I feel as though my masthead "popular" suggests very simply that I intend to produce a magazine whereby the music involved is appealing to the masses or in other words "popular", simply liked by the general public. This will mean the music that will be included in my magazine could be quite diverse ranging from singers such as Taylor Swift and One Direction to rappers such as Jay Z and Kanye West.

Front page layout of Glamour magazine

I am aware this is not a pop magazine, however I love the layout of this magazine and will consider producing a similar format on the front cover of my magazine.

Photoshoot ideas

I love these poses on the front cover of these magazines and may consider referring to this when shooting for my pop magazine!

2 x Front Cover Flat Plans

Here are my front cover plans which give me a rough idea of what kind of layout I am aiming for.

Masthead Colours

I was unsure on what colour scheme to use so I narrowed it down to my first and second colour scheme. I have made a short questionnaire and asked 10 students what colour scheme they preferred. Here are the results. The majority have chosen the first colour scheme so I have used that.

Readership Profile

Readership Profile

The audience for my music magazine are mainly between the ages of about 15-20 year olds. Although the students that filled out my questionnaire were between 16-19 I believe that teenagers of a slightly younger and older age would also enjoy what my magazine has to offer. My audience take an interest to pop music and the majority of people questioned were female. A lot of these students spend their spare time on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter which implies they have a strong connection with their pop idols and are easily able to check out the latest information and gossip in Pop culture. However the male audience took an interest in the magazine also and as a result I have decided my magazine will be aimed predominately towards females, although I will also consider including some material for males in my magazine as well. For example when asked what my audiences interests were, 75% answered either music or sport which appeals to both males and females. Also the fact that such a big proportion enjoy listening to music, this suggests to me that my readers would enjoy keeping up the latest news in the Pop world. When asked what star my readers would like to see on the front page of a pop magazine most people said Miley Cyrus and then Jessie J. This means that when creating my front page I will merge the two and produce a look that will appeal towards my audience.

The demographic of my target audience would be for the aged 16-19 year olds who are currently perhaps in education such as school, college, university who thoroughly enjoy music and catching up with the latest gossip from behind the scenes. I would not necessarily expect my magazine to relate to older people or people who do not show an interest in pop music.

The psychographic of my target audience would be that they are very dedicated to the sport and music industry as these are the students main interests so there is a suggestion that they may keep up with the latest scores in sport or enjoy attending concerts regularly. 20% of my audience say they would look for free samples in my magazine so it may be a good idea to put free tickets inside the magazine or perhaps the chance to win some.
My target audience would purchase the issue on a weekly basis and others said yearly. Many may buy is yearly due to the fact that they do not have disposable income to buy a issue therefore I will not make my magazine too pricey. The majority of my audience said the price they would pay for a magazine is £1-£2 so I will charge £1.50.
